Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at WRFN

At Waterloo Region Family Network (WRFN), we embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a vital and ongoing conversation reflecting our core values and commitment to our community. Diversity is not just a concept; it is central to our identity and the relationships we build with individuals and families with exceptionalities, as well as our community partners and institutions.

Three Black and disabled folx smile and stroll down a sidewalk side by side. On the left, a non-binary person walks with a cane in one hand and a tangle stim toy in the other. In the middle, a non-binary person rolls along in their power wheelchair. On the right, a femme gestures mid-walk.

An Open Dialogue

We believe discussions around diversity and representation should continuously evolve. Instead of viewing DEI as a static framework, we see it as a dynamic dialogue that adapts to society's changing needs. This perspective allows us to make conscious actions and commitments that inform every aspect of our organization, from hiring practices and board member selections to our programs, communications, and collaborations.

Our Roots In Community

WRFN began as a peer-to-peer, parent-to-parent support network, embodying the philosophy of "we get it." This lens informs our DEI initiatives and emphasizes our commitment to being representative of the populations we serve. We strive to create a welcoming environment for new community members who seek our support while ensuring that those we already serve feel respected and valued.

The Complexity of Diversity

Diversity encompasses many factors, including culture, religion, language, political views, social structures, environmental heritage, food, sexuality, gender, and ability. The difficulty of determining diversity is that it often involves comparing groups of people with each other and tracking differences based on a pattern of dominant population; our understanding of diversity must be inclusive and multifaceted and go beyond this comparative approach as there is no dominant group to compare divergence and the process of attempting to do so can be demeaning and exclusionary.

We recognize that measuring diversity can be challenging and may risk isolating specific communities. Therefore, we prioritize fostering a sense of belonging among those in our community; WRFN is about respecting unique journeys and experiences. It is a personal peer-to-peer approach that is crucial to our identity, and it does not track or make others feel like statistical data. This approach avoids isolation or tokenism based on differences. We are about bringing the community together and the benefits of empathy derived from similar experiences, not dividing or categorizing its members.

Our Commitment to Equity

Our commitment to equity involves recognizing and dismantling systemic barriers affecting various community groups. We acknowledge the unique challenges faced by Indigenous peoples, racialized communities, individuals with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. Building equity is a journey that requires ongoing dedication, learning, and transformative change.

Self-Definition and Respect

We emphasize the importance of self-definition, allowing individuals to define themselves and reclaim power over their identities. This approach fosters a sense of belonging and respect for diverse experiences. We understand that language is fluid and evolving and are committed to using terms individuals prefer.

Our Approach to DEI

At WRFN, our approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion is rooted in principles of anti-oppression and equity. We are committed to creating an environment where all community members feel safe and included. Our commitment is not static but a living promise to change, requiring resilience and dedication to achieve accurate equity.
