Family Support Network for Employment Survey

To commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we are releasing a survey to measure the current state of employment for individuals with a developmental disability in Ontario.


We invite you to share your experience as an individual with a developmental disability or as a family member of a person with a developmental disability.

Completion of the survey will take 30 minutes. Your personal information will not be shared, but we will share collective responses to the survey with the government and related agencies. As individuals and families, our knowledge and lived experiences need to be used to mobilize much-needed change.


There is a pronounced lack of data around employment in the open labour market of individuals with a developmental disability, particularly as it relates to those who face higher employment barriers. For governments, what does not get measured does not get addressed.


According to Statistics Canada (PALS 2006) only 1 of 5 (25%) individuals with a developmental disability have a job, and those are primarily part-time positions. For individuals with other disabilities, the percentage of employed people is 53%. In Washington State, with better policies, practices, and supports, almost 75% of individuals with a developmental disability are employed in the community.


The knowledge and lived experiences of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families have inspired many of the changes we have seen over the years, including that inclusive education is quality education for ALL;

  • what living and being included in the community means and looks like;
  • why self-determination and supported decision-making are essential for adults with a developmental disability.

Their sharing of dreams and expectations for a job in the open labor market has allowed us to research and explore evidence-informed best practices on Employment that is inclusive. Help us to move from knowledge to practice and frame a NEW perspective so no one is left behind.
