Pooran Law 2022 Update

Read on to learn more about our work to improve ODSP and the Family Managed Home-Care, the latest on Bill 124 and the Disability Benefit Act.

The Ontario Disability Support Program

("ODSP") will be indexed to match the annual inflation rate, beginning in July 2023. This would be in addition to the 5% increase, which was previously rolled-out in September 2022. Click here to learn more.

Guardianship no longer a barrier to access Family Managed Home Care

We are thrilled to announce that guardianship is no longer a barrier to accessing Family-Managed Home Care funding. The Ministry of Health has officially updated the definition of “Substitute Decision-Maker” in its Family Managed Home Care Program Specifications with big implications for people with intellectual disabilities and their families.  Click here to find out more.

Bill 124 Declared Inconstitutional

Late November 2022, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice struck down “Bill 124”, officially called the Protecting a Sustainable Public Sector for Future Generations Act. The Court decided that Bill 124 violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms’ protections for freedom of association (which protects the right to collective bargaining) and was unconstitutional. This means that Bill 124 will no longer have effect as law (at least for the moment).

The Disability Benefit Act

Bill C-22, commonly known as the Disability Benefit Act, is currently making its way through our Parliamentary system. The bill aims to reduce poverty and support the financial security of working-age Canadians living with disabilities.

We are monitoring the progress of this bill and will keep you updated on the impact it will have on our community.
