Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region (EAFWR) was founded on the values of working with people with disabilities to grow their social relationships and be seen and valued as full contributing citizens in our community. 

The Kitchener-Waterloo Library of Things (KWLOT) is a space for sharing items ranging from tools to camping and kitchen equipment. By sharing items, Library members save money, reduce waste, discover a strong community and provide inclusive and supported employment opportunities.

Role:

The Summer Librarian will help run the Library of Things during our open hours; will support our events and workshops; join community events that we attend to promote the Library of Things. The Librarian will also share and communicate their personal experiences with disability with members and the community as needed.  

Qualifications: 

Lived experience of disability required
Over 18 years of age and legally permitted to work in Canada
Able to travel to and from work in Kitchener
Experience working on a computer/tablet
Ability to go up and down stairs
Ability to lift items up to 50lbs, using safe lifting techniques
Familiarity and participation with the local community is an asset
Passionate about connecting with people
Able to work collaboratively as part of a team 
Eager to learn about the KW Library of Things and our inventory items

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Display Evolving level competency which is defined as “intentional growth of oneself and valuing other’s perspectives. They exhibit the competency consistently in more than one context and promote positive opportunities for change beyond themselves.”  The following competencies will guide the work of the Librarian in this role:

Advocacy
Building Relationships
Problem Solving and Decision Making

 

The requirements listed are guidelines. Candidates do not have to satisfy every requirement or meet every qualification to be considered.  Applicants with lived experiences with mental health, disability, or who identify as BIPOC, 2SLGBTQ+ are encouraged to apply, and to seek accommodations as required to support their candidacy.

 

Hours and Pay:

$17.26 per hour + 6% vacation pay

Tuesday, May 20th – Saturday, September 6th, 2025

 

The position requires a maximum of 10 hours per week.  Work hours usually fall on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, along with some weekends. Hours will be decided together with the rest of the team.

 

Responsibilities and Functions:

This role will work closely with our KW Library of Things team and will report to the Community Development Program Manager. The Summer Librarian’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

Open Hours (Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00pm-7:30pm; Saturdays 10:30am-1:30pm)

Learn about the KW Library of Things so you can answer questions
Use a computer or tablet to record items going in and out
Help put away returned items and prepare items going out that day
Keep the Library, and other rooms used, neat and tidy
Help staff to accommodate library members who may use the Library differently

 

KWLOT Events and Workshops

Help set up and clean up Library table, items and display
Provide insights from your own experiences about the value of employment and the challenges in finding it when facing barriers, like disability
Talk to people attending so you can answer questions about the Library
Promote KW Library of Things by talking to people attending and handing out information materials
Support creating workshops that are inclusive and accessible to all
Engage in conversations about equity, inclusion, belonging and diversity
