Registered Disability Savings Plan

The federal government is currently hosting a survey on Registered Disability Savings Plans. If you or a relative has an RDSP, we would encourage you to complete the survey.

Near the end of the survey, there is a question asking for open-ended responses to the question, “Overall how good a job is the program doing at helping to ensure that the future financial needs of the beneficiary will be met?”

This is an avenue to suggest areas where the RDSP could be improved. Here are some ideas to consider:

·         Just 25% of Canadians eligible for the RDSP actually access it. This could be improved by simplifying the application process, and covering the costs of required medical forms.

·        The rules associated with the RDSP should be made less restrictive. For example:

·        Allow people to withdraw their funds earlier, if needed, given that the average life-span of people with disabilities, while increasing, is still less than Canadians without a disability.

·        When it is time to withdraw funds from a person’s RDSP, make the process less complex, and increase the amount of funds that can be withdrawn without penalty.

·        Make penalties easier to understand less punitive.

·        The amount of the grants and bonds should be increased as the cost of living continues to rise.
