Research Study on connections between education and physical activity in preventing cancer in immigrant women

Study Title

Co-developing an intervention to raise immigrant women’s awareness of physical activity (PA) and cancer prevention

Investigators

Principal investigator: Dr. Anna Gagliardi (PI) from University Health Network (UHN) Co-investigators: Dr. Nazilla Khanlou, Dr. Christine Friedenreich, Dr. Catherine Sabiston, Dr. Jennifer Tomasone and Dr. Jenna Smith-Turchyn.

Ethical approval

Approval was received from University Health Network Research Ethics Board on March 25, 2022.

Background

− Research shows that physical activity (PA) reduces the risk of many types of cancer

− Many immigrant women have low rates of PA

− Reasons may include family obligations, cultural beliefs/norms about PA, and socioeconomic factors

− Health promotion to immigrant women must be “culturally-safe”: offered in local, familiar, trusted settings and include women only

− Community agencies (e.g. settlement agencies, cultural groups) have experience in offering education to immigrants and are well-placed to host education sessions on the role of PA in reducing cancer risk.

Purpose

The research study aims to assess the benefits of community-based education for immigrant women on the importance of physical activity in preventing cancer and how to weave physical activity through daily activities.

What does the study involve?

The study involves a single telephone interview of approximately 20 minutes. During the interview, we will ask for your advice on how to design community-based education, for example, what information about physical activity is needed and how it should be communicated.

*Study running until the end of August 2022.

Eligibility

Immigrant woman aged 18 or older, African or Caribbean, who immigrated to Canada 10 years or less at the time of study, and can understand and speak English language.
